		<description>[ 14 / the college of idaho : viewbook ]

problem /
The objective of this project was to create a viewbook for The College of Idaho. The brochure must act as an informational piece for potential students.

solution /
The College of Idaho is strongly rooted in a sense of place and community. They cater their unique educational "peak" program for student expression and exploration. This freedom of choice for the students helped to inform the expressive nature of the form the viewbook took which is an oversized newspaper format. The viewbook is large and engaging with portrait polaroids of student profiles, facts about the college, large full bleed photography and bold colorful information graphics and typography.

problem /
The objective of this project was to create a giving brochure for The College of Idaho. The brochure must act as an information piece highlighting the past, present and future of the College as well as giving opportunities for new and established donors.

solution /
The College of Idaho is strongly rooted in a sense of place and community. Alumni and Faculty are very invested in the future of the college and of the students who study there. A diecut shape of the state of Idaho was used on the cover to highlight this sense of place as well as reveal the essence of the student community. Large expressive type were used for call-to-action, a promotional DVD was included as well as single sheets highlighting the financial data.

		<description>[ 12 / 826 Valencia : Pirate Store ]

problem /
826 Valencia's Pirate Store was in need of some new merch. Pirates just aren't the same these days, they needed some guidance.

solution /
A group of us at Eleven banded together to create some posters and t-shirts, sponsored by four top international pirate brands: Level Brand Peg Legs, Herreshoff Doubly Reflecting Octants, Serene Sails Poison and Confederated Shipwrights. Four beautifully silk-screened posters were created as well as some pretty awesome t-shirts. You can buy them here.

		<description>[ 11 / giving brochure : PSU library ]

problem /
The objective of this project was to create a comprehensive giving brochure for Portland State University Library. The brochure must act as an information piece highlighting the past, present and future of the library as well as giving opportunities for new and established donors. Folders and Event Banners were also developed to create a unified library identity.

solution /
Portland State University Library is the heart of PSU and the community around it. The brochure was developed to express just that. Throughout the piece are full bleed portraits highlighting personal stories of four people who have or continue to utilize the library resources. The overall aesthetic is a nod to traditional library cataloging while maintaining a very clean and modern layout. This highlights the historical significance of a modern and forward thinking library.

		<description>[ 10 / special collections &#38; archives : PSU library ]

problem /
The objective of this project was to create a promotional piece for Portland State University Library's Special Collections &#38; Archives department. This piece was to contain information describing the services within the department as well as appeal to prospective donors.

solution /
The Special Collections &#38; Archives department within any library is a treasure trove of items. PSU Library has an amazing collection ranging from Dark Horse Comics to The Gates Collection of African American History and Culture. Using full bleed images from items directly from this department we were able to showcase the rich and diverse collections held within. The brochure is a z-fold format which allows both divisions to be contained together in one piece, uniting the collection. The brochure is held in a pocket folder with metallic ink printing, further emphasizing the very special quality of the special collections and archives.

		<description>[ 09 / the clean air mission : omission ]

problem /
The objective of this project was to first come up with an innovative, eco-friendly and wildly radical earth-changing product. This product would then require a brand identity system, inclulding a unique name, logo, brochure and stationery system. Finally, to promote the innovative product an event would be held, sponsored by French Paper Company, to invite consumers to become more familiar with this new invention.

solution /
Omission is a company that produces filters that you attach to your car's exhaust which then works to eliminate any harmful chemicals from being emitted into the atmosphere. This project represents the branding and identity system of the Omission product/company. First, the name omission was created as a play on the very function of the product as it eliminates or omits any harmful emissions from your car. The logo developed is a nod to the scientific aspect of this new invention and shows a molecular representation within the logo-type. The stationery system utilizes a modern layout with die-cut elements within the logo to highlight the molecular form. The brochure was developed to be visually similar to car repair invoices and utilizes a file folder to contain all the information about the company in an organized manner. Carbon copies and hand-drawn illustrations add a more approachable and friendly voice to a very scientifically driven product.

Omission is a company that produces filters that you attach to your car's exhaust which then works to eliminate any harmful chemicals from being emitted into the atmosphere. To promote this product a go-kart event called the, White Knuckle Race, was held to demonstrate just how this product functions as it was attached to all the go-kart exhausts. The invitation cover
surface is tactile and reminiscent of road pavement with a yellow divider line. The inside has a retro and nostalgic feel by use of patterns, collage elements and clip-art to add a playful and humorous quality to this very serious environmental issue. The promotional poster is a call to "Burn Some Rubber" as a reminder to potential consumers of the product and attendees of the go-kart event. Guests receive a car air freshener in the form of two paper dice as a take-away piece.

		<description>[ 07 / the restaurant spin-off : dopo ]

problem /
The objective of this project was to chose an existing restaurant and create a brand extension in either grocery, coffee shop or take-out services. The extension would translate across multiple packaged items and would reinvigorate the current brand identity and create a new market for products and services for the restaurant.

solution /
Dopo is a full-service Italian restaurant located in Oakland, CA. Chef-owner Jon Smulewitz and his staff create each day’s menu using fresh fish and seasonal vegetables to celebrate regional Italian cooking and then add lesser-known, seasonally driven dishes to the mix. I developed a sub-brand grocery store product line, Dopo Cucina, that is infused with the fresh, unique experience of restaurant dining but for use at home this includes, prepackaged pasta, seasonings, flour, oil and cookies. This upscale product line functions in the modern kitchen yet conveys a sense of traditional and regional Italian personality into the everyday. The design aesthetic is a marriage of simple and clean design infused with a sense of Italian tradition through the use of hand-drawn patterns and a color coded labeling system.

		<description>[ 06 / the pantone promotion : pantone ]

problem /
The objective of this project was to create three posters to promote pantone colors. Using only 3-4 pantone colors of our choice we were asked to create a series of posters that promoted pantone as a company as well as expressed the palettes.

solution /
I started this assignment by first selecting the concept for the three posters. Finding things, objects, stories based on three was the first way I came to this solution. Posters based on well known child-hood fables, most notably that come to my mind are: the three little pigs, little red riding hood and goldilocks and the three bears. This project began with a sense of innocence that quickly took a down-turn after I discovered the true fables, not the Disney versions that I thought I knew. To emphasize this surprise of story I chose the most gruesome or deceptive moments to illustrate and express the palette.

		<description>[ 05 / the apartment garden : urban dig ]

problem /
The objective of this project was to create a fictitious company that had a green message and/or service at its core. Logo development, promotional brochures to contain the brand identity, as well as products and a system in which to house these materials, were all requirements of this project.

solution /
Urban Dig was developed in response to my experience of city living and the lack of earth at my disposal for cultivation of a garden. With sustainability at the forefront of green discussion I developed a non-profit company to assist apartment dwellers, who have little to no access to land, in creating a sustainable, edible garden within their apartment. The logo is based on the concept of city living, crammed spaces and high rise buildings but leans towards a more organic shape to emphasize the green service of Urban Dig. Custom patterns and products were created as well as a plantable stationery system to strengthen the unique yet innovative company position.
